Author's Statement

This story represents new territory for me: writing genuine tenderness between a father and son without irony or betrayal. My work typically treats family bonds as sites of trauma or deception. Here, I wanted to explore grief that strengthens rather than destroys connection. I maintained my signature techniques—clinical detachment, present tense immediacy, the chorus of repeated actions, bodies as meat—but allowed authentic love to exist underneath the minimalism. The challenge was letting the emotion leak through the sparse prose without violating the flat tone that defines my voice. The weighing room became a metaphor for how we carry what remains after loss: everything that has weight continues to matter.
