Author's Statement
This story represents new territory because it attempts something I've typically avoided: genuine emotional stakes in a parent-child relationship. While maintaining my signature flat affect, brand cataloging, and surface-level observation, I wanted to see if tenderness could exist beneath that affectless veneer without breaking the tonal contract. The narrator's emotional poverty is still there—the inability to say what he means, the retreat into consumption and surface detail—but for once, there's someone who matters enough to crack that surface. The "new territory" is letting love exist in the silences between brand names, allowing the reader to feel what the narrator cannot quite articulate. It's Ellis-style prose with an actual beating heart underneath.
