Author's Statement

This story represents uncharted territory for me: the abandonment of retrospective narration for the immediacy of present tense, and the exchange of privileged academic settings for the precarious working-class life of a museum security guard. Where my novels typically excavate past catastrophes through memory's distorting lens, "The Vanishing Hour" unfolds in real time, denying both narrator and reader the safety of distance. The compression required by the format forced a new economy in my prose—atmospheric density achieved in paragraphs rather than pages, character revealed through crisis rather than accumulation. Yet I retained my signature techniques: pathetic fallacy, sensory precision, the inverted mystery structure. This is Tartt-style suspense stripped of its usual temporal armor, a present-tense experiment in immediate literary dread.
