Author's Statement

This story represents new territory for me in three distinct ways. First, I've compressed my typically maximalist prose into ultra-tight chapters, forcing every sentence to bear maximum weight—a stylistic constraint I usually resist. Second, I've ventured into harder science fiction than my work typically allows, treating the speculative premise with the procedural seriousness of a detective plot rather than as metaphor alone. Third, I've written a female protagonist whose obsessive perception comes from professional expertise rather than neurological condition—a conscious inversion of my Lionel Essrog pattern. The challenge was maintaining my signature voice while working in the compression of flash fiction, making each chapter simultaneously self-contained and propulsive. This is my attempt to discover what the Lethem sound becomes when forced into a different frequency range.
